...providing youth with a positive, professional way to explore emotions

 News to Note...

This year will mark the 25th anniversary for “Expressing Feelings Through Art.”  Each year, the event showcases the art and essays of high students from Los Angeles city and county schools.

Introduction

Expressing Feelings Through Art is an annual art contest for high school students in Los Angeles County. For young people, it provides a positive, professional way to explore their emotions; for the public, it paints a powerful portrait of the concerns and complexities of today’s youth.

The project, a partnership with the nonprofit Light Bringer Project, is open to students in grades nine through 12 at all Los Angeles County and Los Angeles Unified School District schools.

Each year, we welcome entries of students’ artwork – painting, drawing, photography, collage – accompanied by a personal statement about the meaning of their work. A panel of judges from the art, education and mental health communities select works to be exhibited in our annual show.

In the spring, we hold a reception to recognize all of our student exhibitors and present awards to those whose work is considered most outstanding. Along with cash prizes to 10 top exhibitors, we award a matching amount to help their teachers purchase art supplies for the classroom. With support from arts and cultural organizations, we honor students with gifts such as memberships to local museums, classes at arts education institutions and gift certificates.

We hold the exhibit at a different location each year. Over the project’s history, we have been fortunate to display students’ art and essays at the Los Angeles City Hall, Museum of Tolerance, Watts Towers Cultural Center, California Science Center, Beverly Hills City Hall, the Helen Lindhurst Fine Arts Gallery at the University of Southern California and the Junior Arts Center Gallery at Barnsdall Park in Hollywood.

Expressing Feelings Through Art was founded in 1982 by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health’s Children and Youth Services Bureau. An endowment from the W. M. Keck Foundation has ensured the program’s continued positive presence in schools.

We thank the arts, cultural and business communities for their support of our project.
