Our Mission
To fulfill our mission to “ensure that all people with mental
illness assume their full and rightful place in the community,”
we
- Advocate for quality care and
the protection of rights for people with mental illness and for
children with emotional problems,
- Innovate by designing and demonstrating
service and housing models for people with mental illness,
- Replicate effective
models through our training and consultation, and
- Educate about mental illness
to increase public awareness, improve access to care and end discrimination.
Our Affiliations
MHA is one of the largest affiliates of the National Mental Health
Association (NMHA) and the Mental Health Association in California
(MHAC). Founded in 1909, NMHA is the nation’s oldest and largest
nonprofit organization addressing all aspects of mental health and
mental illness. NMHA and its 340 affiliates form a network of advocates
who work hand in hand with people with mental illness, their families
and mental health professionals to improve understanding, treatment
and services. MHAC is California’s leading mental health advocacy
organization.
We also belong to the:
- International Association of Psychosocial Rehabilitation Services
- California Association of Social Rehabilitation Agencies
- California Coalition for Mental Health
- California Council of Community Mental Health Agencies
- California Network of Mental Health Clients
- Association of Community Human Service Agencies
- Health and Mental Health Coalition – Los Angeles
The employment services of our MHA Village are accredited by the
national Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities,
which commended us for our “noticeable commitment to improving
persons’ lives.”
Our Funders
MHA is funded by a combination of private and public sources.
Community contributions are the cornerstone that makes all we do
possible, and individuals support our work by being members of MHA,
honoring others with tributes and memorials, and providing special
support. Our endowment was started and is sustained through bequests
and other gifts from individuals.
We
are proud to be a United Way agency. Along with its long-standing
support for our work, United Way helped us start our Antelope Valley
services and is a funder of our Homeless Solutions Access Center.
The generous support of foundations and corporations establish
and enhance our services. Our Human Services Academy, the first
in Los Angeles to focus on attracting youth to nonprofit work, was
built with and benefited tremendously from the support of the ARCO
Foundation, The California Wellness Foundation, Crail-Johnson Foundation,
Entertainment Industry Foundation, W. M. Keck Foundation, B. C.
McCabe Foundation, Northrop Grumman Corporation, Ralph M. Parsons
Foundation, S. Mark Taper Foundation and Weingart Foundation.
For our other programs, we have received support from the Boeing
Company, Eli Lilly Company, Josephine S. Gumbiner Foundation, Kaiser
Permanente – Los Angeles, Lockheed Martin Corporation, Northrop
Grumman Corporation, and the Robert Ellis Simon Foundation, among
others.
We provide services through contracts with the Los Angeles County
Department of Mental Health; California departments of Mental Health
and Rehabilitation; cities of Long Beach, Hawthorne, Huntington
Park and Torrance; U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development;
Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority; and the Emergency Food
and Shelter Program.
