As a result of the work Mental Health America of Los Angeles (MHALA) does within the Hispanic/Latino community, MHALA’s North County Chief Service Officer Luis Montes was asked to serve on the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority’s newly formed Latinx People Experiencing Homelessness Taskforce. MHALA hosted a listening session on behalf of the taskforce in March. 

“Last year, we provided street-based outreach services to more than 16,000 individuals, 14% of whom are Hispanic/Latino,” Montes said. “Participating in this new taskforce will help inform the services MHALA provides to our unhoused members and help to reduce the rates of homelessness throughout Los Angeles County.” 

This taskforce is rooted in equity, inclusion, and belonging principles, and brings together leaders from multiple sectors interested in improving homeless services to meet the needs of the county’s most vulnerable community members and reduce homelessness.

The purpose of the task force is to critically examine and evaluate the delivery of services to Latinx people experiencing homelessness, develop strategic recommendations to decrease the number of Latinx individuals experiencing homelessness, and improve service delivery.
