I Feel Grounded Again
I Feel Grounded Again
“I don’t feel like the world is going out from under me anymore. We knew we had someone we could count on."
Life took an unexpected turn for Navy Veteran Phyllis H. After proudly serving in the 1960s, she never imagined that decades later she and her adult daughter would find themselves living in an RV in the desert with their pets — without access to running water or electricity.
“It was tough,” Phyllis said. “We were just trying to make it work. There were no bathrooms, no water. We didn’t know how we’d ever get back on our feet.”
But they were able to find their footing once they were connected to MHALA’s Veterans Program. Staff helped Phyllis and her daughter, Dawn, secure a permanent home, furnish it, and make sure everything was in working order.
“They helped us every step of the way,” Phyllis shared. “They found us a house, helped make sure things worked, and even bought us beds. It made our house feel like home.”
A Sense of Security
For Dawn, the move meant more than just a roof overhead — it was a return to peace of mind. “I don’t feel like the world is going out from under me anymore,” she said. “I used to feel like we were just dropping into a deeper hole. But now, I feel grounded again.”
Today, Phyllis and Dawn are feeling settled and focused on rebuilding. They spend time taking care of their dogs and working in the garden, replanting flowers and taking the time to make their home warm and welcoming.
A World of Difference
Both women say the support from MHALA gave them more than just housing — it gave them community and dignity.
“Whenever we called, they were there. We knew we had someone we could count on. I’m so grateful,” Phyllis said. “It’s a world of difference.”
